Dwight Yorke believes Erik ten Hag and Manchester United "missed the boat" by not signing Kieran Tierney.

The Arsenal full-back was struggling for minutes at the Emirates and was always set to move on this summer, eventually joining Real Sociedad on loan for the season. United found themselves desperately seeking cover in that position after injuries to the likes of Luke Shaw.

Ten Hag managed to land Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham on loan, with a break clause in January. Yorke though was less than impressed with the recruitment decisions made by his former club, claiming that none of their signings will "get people too excited".

He told Genting Casino: "I’m not really happy with Man United’s transfer window business. When you look at where Man United are as a team, we’ve signed names that won’t get people too excited. I think we missed the boat with Kieran Tierney as I like his energy, despite his injury issues.

"We’ve finally signed a traditional striker, but I think the manager trusts the players he has and he has to make the most of it. I assume he’s happy with the squad, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens."

United have endured a mixed start to the season despite Ten Hag, once again, spending notable sums on the likes of Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund. A deal was also completed on deadline day that saw Sofyan Amrabat head to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have lost both their away trips so far this term, each of them in north London. They were undone by Tottenham before Arsenal's late show earned them all three points before the international break. United have been unconvincing in home wins over Wolves and Nottingham Forest.

The balance of the team has been cited as an issue with last season's standout, Casemiro, being exposed in the middle of the pitch. Questions were raised when they signed a player of his age on a lengthy deal and already those concerns are being aired once more.

In defence, there are injury concerns surrounding Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, who both were forced off in the loss at Arsenal. Tierney, as he did in north London, is capable of filling in centrally but Ten Hag may have to turn to the likes of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire.
