TRIBUTES have flooded in for a talented young footballer who died earlier this week.

Robbie Meiklem, who played for Girvan FC's Under-20s development team, passed away at Ayr Hospital.

The club told fans in a statement: "In respect of Robbie, both the Girvan Development team and First Team games this weekend have been cancelled.

"Also, all Development and First team matches across the West of Scotland Leagues this weekend will hold a one-minute silence in memory of Robbie."

Scottish football clubs were united in grief as they paid heartfelt tributes to the young star, with many organising a minute's silence in his memory.

Whitletts Victoria Under-18s wrote: "Everyone involved with the Under-18s squad would like to send out their condolences upon the passing of Robbie.

"Robbie played in Whitlett's development squad and some of our lads were able to get a chance to play alongside Robbie.

"Our team along with our opponents, Tass Thistle will be observing a minute's silence on Friday night to remember Robbie."

Kilwinning Rangers FC Under-20s told of their sadness at the news.

The team added: "The 2004 players in our team were used to coming up against Robbie throughout their youth football journey when he was with Coylton and other top teams as well as us having several current players who were teammates over the years.

"A tragic loss of a young life. Sincere condolences to Robbie’s family, friends and to all that played with him."

Craigmark Burntonians FC added: "Before this Saturday's match we will be holding a minute silence in honour of Robbie Meiklem.

"Another young man gone far too soon.

"Everyone at Craigmark would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Robbie’s friends and family as well as our friends at Girvan Football Club."

Friends, family and teammates flocked to social media to remember the player with "unbelievable" ability.

One wrote: "Absolutely devastating news this week that young Robbie passed away.

"Robbie was a massive part of the Coylton 04 team. He helped create some lifelong memories and moments to cherish for everyone involved with the team.

"Shine bright like a diamond Robbie."

Another said: "Lucky enough to play with and against Robbie many times. Unbelievable football ability but an even better lad."

A third commented: "Some player to be in a team with, will be truly missed."
