Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles was reportedly attacked in a violent mass brawl in which someone allegedly threatened to shoot him.

Lascelles was filmed fighting off a gang of men during the early hours of Sunday August 20 after going out with his younger brother and a friend in Newcastle. Police were called to Westgate Road following a clash outside The Mile Castle pub in the city centre in the hours after Newcastle lost 1-0 against Manchester City.

According to the Daily Mail, Lascelles had just left the Chinawhite nightclub when his 19-year-old brother was elbowed in the throat in what is alleged to have been an unprovoked attack. The 29-year-old stepped in to try and protect his brother when a bottle was thrown in his direction and he was allegedly punched in the face.

Lascelles, who appears to be wearing a green gilet, was then seen pursuing some attackers down the road before swinging punches in their direction, it is claimed. The Newcastle defender’s friend was allegedly left unconscious on the floor, having been kicked in the head, while his brother was bleeding from the face.

During the fight, it is alleged that one of the gang threatened to ‘shoot’ Lascelles and his group. Northumbria Police reportedly attended the scene, while paramedics treated Lascelles’ unconscious friend.

Newcastle United declined to comment when approached by Mirror Football.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 4am on Sunday, August 20, we received a report of disorder involving a number of people on Westgate Road, in Newcastle city centre.

“Officers attended however it is believed that those involved had already left the scene before they arrived.

Lascelles is yet to make an appearance for Newcastle this season and was an unused substitute in the defeat by City before the fight. The players were given two days off by manager Eddie Howe after the match.

He was back on the bench for the 2-1 defeat by Liverpool at St James’ Park on Sunday. Lascelles joined Newcastle in 2014 from Nottingham Forest and was made captain in 2016. He has made 225 appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals.
