Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has poured cold water on suggestions the Magpies have a clause allowing them to potentially sign Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo, who left Manchester United in November, was unveiled by new club Al-Nassr on Tuesday. He has joined the Saudi side on a mega-money contract, but reports on the continent suggested a move to Newcastle - subject of a Saudi-backed takeover in 2021 - could be on the cards.
Howe was asked about the reports ahead of his team's meeting with Premier League leaders Arsenal. While he had no plans to play down Ronaldo's quality and legacy, he made it clear a move to St James' Park wasn't in the veteran's future.
"We wish Cristiano all the best in his new venture but there's no truth in that from our perspective," Howe said. The club broke their transfer record over the summer to sign Sweden striker Alexander Isak, and it appears even a top four finish wouldn't bring about a loan swoop for Ronaldo.
The veteran forward, meanwhile, suggested his work in Europe is done after signing a deal with Al-Nassr which runs until 2025. “So far I'm feeling very good. I’m so proud to make this decision in my life, and as you mentioned before in Europe my work is done," he said in a press conference upon being unveiled.
Ronaldo falls well short behind world's richest footballer despite £1.3bn deal"I won everything, I played at the most important clubs and for me now it is a new challenge in Asia."

After Man Utd failed to qualify for this season's Champions League, Ronaldo appeared keen on a summer exit. That didn't materialise, and he played for the Red Devils in the Europa League, but would later see his contract at Old Trafford terminated by mutual agreement.
"I can say now I had many opportunities in Europe," he said upon joining Al-Nassr. "Many clubs in Brazil, Australia, USA, even in Portugal many tried to sign me.
“But I gave my word to this club not only to develop the club, but the country. I know what I want, but I also know what I don’t want.
“I'm a unique player, I beat all the records there [Europe], so I want to beat a few here. This contract is unique, because I'm unique, so this is normal.
"[My family] are happy as well. When I take decisions my family support me, especially my kids! They are very happy, the welcome was amazing, we feel good. Saudi Arabian people are lovely with me and my family."
Ronaldo could make his Al-Nassr debut against Al-Ta'ee on Thursday, and revealed he is ready to play if called upon by manager Rudi Garcia. The club sit top of a congested league table, a point clear of Al-Shabab, who they face on the weekend.
