BRENDAN RODGERS broke plenty of records during his first spell as Celtic boss.

But in the early days of his second reign in charge of the Hoops he has earned himself a wholly unwanted statistic.

Rodgers watched in horror as his Celtic side gifted Lazio possession in the dying seconds of their Champions League clash at Parkhead tonight.

Cameron Carter-Vickers was caught on the ball inside his own half and the Italian side pounced on the mistake with Pedro applying the killer finishing touch.

The late winner came after the Scottish Premiership champions had gone in front twice - only for the second of those goals to be disallowed for offside.

With Lazio running out 2-1 victors, not only does the result leave Celtic with no points after two games...

But it has put Rodgers in the unfortunate position of having with the WORST managerial record in the Champions League of anyone who has managed at least 20 games in the competition.

The 50-year-old has just TWO wins from 20 games at Europe's top table, according to Opta.

So out of the 87 coaches to have managed 20 matches in the competition, none have won fewer than the Northern Irishman.

The statistic only includes matches in the group stage as opposed to preliminary ties in the qualifying rounds.

His full record reads two wins, five draws and 13 defeats.

Rodgers managed in the Champions League with Liverpool before he came to Celtic and it was with the Anfield club where he earned the first of his pair of wins, way back in 2014.

Indeed, it came in his first ever fixture at that level as the Reds beat Ludogorets 2-1.

His only other three points came in 2017, in his second season as Celtic boss, when his Hoops side beat Anderlecht 3-0 in Belgium.

Broadcaste beIN Sports poked fun at the Celtic boss on social media, as they posted: "It's happened.

"Brendan Rodgers becomes statistically the WORST manager to have managed 20 games or more in the history of the Champions League."

2 wins out of 20 is unmatched ????"

Rodgers bemoaned "strange" refereeing decisions in the wake of his side's loss to Lazio.

He said: "I think you see now in Europe it's a little bit more precious, even than the domestic game.

"I watched the Champions League games last night and obviously tonight some strange decisions to be honest. But I'll focus more on the performance and the performance overall merited something from the game."
