WE'VE all used a TV remote control but many don't realise what the on/off switch actually means.

The big button at the top doesn't actually switch off your telly.

It actually just puts your set from on to standby.

Cracked.com posted an explanation on Facebook of symbols you never notice in everyday life - and their true meanings.

They wrote: "Ever wonder what those symbols on power switches and buttons mean? (Don't be embarrassed, many people do!)"

So what does the circular design with the vertical line cutting through the top actually mean?

It turns out it's based on a binary number system.

The "I" represents "1" or "on".

And the "O" represents a zero or "off".

But they then highlight that by pressing this button on your TV remote, the device is only placed "between full 'on' or 'standby' (not fully 'OFF') with each press".

One viewer reacted: "It took years of operating all kinds of equipment before I noticed the pattern."

If you're a Sky subscriber, you may be surprised to learn that the remote has a few hidden tricks of its own.

An expert recently revealed that people are constantly missing that the logo at the top of their remote is actually a fully functioning button.
