Coleen described it as a "horrible dream" and questioned the future of their relationship.

She also had "screaming matches" with her spouse after she learned about his infidelity when he slept with Gina McCarrick, then 37, at a £45-a-go brothel in Liverpool.

Writing in her autobiography, My Account, Coleen recalled the painful moment that he confessed to cheating.

In an extract in the Mail, she wrote: "The full story was that when he was sixteen, Wayne had visited prostitutes in a Liverpool massage parlour.

"When Wayne sat me down and told me it was true and that the story was about to break in the national press I was confused and hurt. I couldn't even speak to him.

"More than that, I felt ashamed."

She continued: "Everyone knew, and everyone seemed to have an opinion. I sat with it all swirling around me like some horrible dream, unable to decide what was best or what I wanted.

"A voice inside me told me not to do anything rash and not to make a decision in the midst of my anger.

"Dealing with that kind of thing was heart-breaking enough, but I was eighteen –years-old. I was upset and confused, not knowing what to think or how others might react."

Coleen said that she wasn't ready to throw the towel in and gave him another chance after he admitted he was "devastated" the way he had acted.

The star said they had "a few screaming matches" but accepted that they were in a "stronger place" and had grown up a lot since first meeting.

Coleen also opened up about how it affected Wayne, with him suffering from depression on and off since he began his public football career.

She added: “Still to this day he has it – everyone on him. Not to see what he's doing right but to see what he's doing wrong. It's a shame.”

In 2004, the Sunday Mirror reported a teenage Rooney had paid £140 for sex with prostitute Charlotte Glover, then 21, and gave her his autograph as a “souvenir”.

A month later, he was said to have slept with Gina McCarrick, then 37, at a £45-a-go brothel in Liverpool.

The football star visited the brothel 10 times, and was caught on CCTV.

It was at this same brothel that he was said to have slept with grandmother Patricia Tierney, then 48, who wore a rubber catsuit and was known as the ‘Auld Slapper’.

She later denied these claims, while Rooney went on to admit to sleeping with unnamed prostitutes.

He said: “Foolish as it now seems I did on occasions visit massage parlours and prostitutes.

“I now regret it deeply and hope people may understand that it was the sort of mistake you make when you are young and stupid. It was at a time when I was very young and immature.”

Coleen didn’t publicly comment on the claims at the time, but later wrote in her book, Welcome to My World, how she and Wayne were yet to have sex when he visited the brothel.

“The truth is, and I’ve never said this before, at that time in our relationship I’d never even slept with Wayne,” she wrote. “I was only 16 and we weren’t having that kind of relationship at that stage.”
