Ryan Reynolds came up with the perfect response after Wrexham produced more late drama in Tuesday's League Two win over Sutton United.

The Red Dragons have rarely done things the easy way since Reynolds and fellow Hollywood actor Rob McElhenney took ownership of the club in 2021, and Tuesday's win was the latest dramatic conclusion at The Racecourse Ground.

Star striker Paul Mullin fired Wrexham into an early lead but they were pegged back on the hour by Aiden O'Brien, putting Phil Parkinson's side at risk of losing their place in the top three.

But Elliot Lee, so often Wrexham's hero this season, lashed a wicked strike into the back of the net in the final minute of the 90. It was his ninth goal of the season, extending Wrexham's unbeaten run to six games in the league and keeping them in touch with Stockport County and Notts County at the top of the table.

Late goals have been a feature of Wrexham's return to the EFL after 15 years away, with Steven Fletcher's 95th-minute equaliser against Crewe Alexandra and Jordan Davies' last-gasp winner against Salford City helping the Red Dragons climb the table in recent weeks.

In a fitting response to Tuesday's thrilling climax, Deadpool star Reynolds took to social media to say: "Handing out heart attacks since 1864."

While the late drama is sure to make for entertaining viewing by the time series three of Welcome To Wrexham is released in a year's time, assistant manager Steve Parkin believes they cannot keep relying on heroics at the death if they are to be promoted this season.

“I think the crowd got frustrated which led to the lads wanting to do their best but forcing things with their football which they didn’t really need to do,” he told the Wrexham Leader. “We just needed to stay patient, and we go right to the very end,

“They are a great set of lads, they work hard and they never know when they are beat, and that little bit of quality did them in the end. They really believe in the dressing room, as we do of course, that they go right to whatever it may be; 100th minute if necessary.

“But the key thing is we don’t want to be relying on that all the time and we have already relied on it quite a bit this season. At the end of the day, there’s loads of different ways to get three points and we will take it.”

Wrexham have become an international attraction since Reynolds and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia creator McElhenney bought the club two years ago. With a new legion of fans across the globe following the success of the FX and Disney+ documentary series, Wrexham won the National League title last season and they are tipped to make it back-to-back promotions this season.
