A SPANISH duke and duchess have been told they must change their daughter's name after the whopping 157-letter name was dubbed "too long" by authorities.

Fernando Fitz-James Stuart and wife Sofia Palazuelo called their second child Sofía Fernanda Dolores Cayetana Teresa Ángela de la Cruz Micaela del Santísimo Sacramento del Perpetuo Socorro de la Santísima Trinidad y de Todos Los Santos.

The girl's 25 word name is reportedly a tribute to the deceased Duchess of Alba, family members and religious devotions.

Spanish newspaper El Pais reported: "The first name, Sofia, for example, was chosen in honour of her mother and grandmother, Sofia Barroso, and the second, Fernanda, as a tribute to her father, Duke of Huescar, as well as her great-uncle, Fernando Martínez of Irujo, Marquis of San Vicente del Barco."

The infant's baptism was held in the historic centre of Seville earlier this month, though her legal name may end up being different from her baptismal one.

The Spanish register states that children's names must not exceed more than "one compound name and two simple ones".

If the baby's name is not shortened from its current 11 different names, it will not be legally registered in Spain.

Baby Sofia's older sister also has a rather long name - Rosario Matilde Sofía Cayetana Dolores Teresa - but the tot goes by Rosario.

It seems as though long winded names run in the family, as the late Duchess Alba had a mouthful of a name as well - María del Rosario Cayetana Paloma Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Fernanda Teresa Francisca de Paula Lourdes Antonia Josefa Fausta Rita Castor Dorotea Santa Esperanza Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva Falcó y Gurtubay.

It remains unclear which names the Duke and Duchess will remove from their daughter's current title.

Despite it's jaw dropping length, baby Sofia's name is not the longest in the world - that title belongs to a girl nicknamed Jamie from Texas.

Mum Sandra Williams said she wanted to make sure her baby’s name was unique, but rather then focus on unusual lettering, she concluded that its length was the way to go.

When their baby girl was born on September 12, 1984, Sandra and her partner formally submitted her name as Rhoshandiatellyneshiaunneveshenk Koyaanisquatsiuth Williams on her birth certificate.

But just three weeks later they concluded that it simply wasn’t long enough – filing a 1,000-word-plus amendment that granted her certificate a two-foot extension.

Jamie's first name comprises of 1,019 letters. In full it reads:

It was so influential that it even prompted a law change in Texas, meaning children could only be given a name that fitted within the ‘name’ box on the birth certificate form.
