Families are still battling with rocketing prices in shops even as inflation begins to ease, Labour has warned.
Ahead of economic figures being published tomorrow, Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves accused “out of touch” Rishi Sunak of not doing enough to bring down people’s bills.
The Government on Wednesday is expected to meet its target to halve inflation from the 10% it was at the beginning of this year. The rate, which measures how much prices are increasing, has fallen significantly. But many families will continue to feel the pinch as even though prices may not be rising as quickly, they are certainly not coming down.
Official figures show that the cost of everyday supermarket staples have dramatically increased in the past four years. A 500g block of cheese has risen by £1.73 from the £3.48 it was in September. The cost of eight sausages has leapt 90p from £2.26, while 10 rashers of bacon have increased 48p from £2.15. A pint of lager has gone up 93p from £3.72. A 1.5kg portion of chicken has gone up £1.73 from £4.04.
Ms Reeves said: “After thirteen years of the economic failure, the Conservatives have left working people worse off, with higher prices in the shops. The cost of living crisis is still hurting families across Britain, but Rishi Sunak is completely out of touch and has no plan to cut people’s bills.
