Dave Courtney’s former girlfriend has revealed the notorious gangster was a "big softie" behind closed doors.

The 64-year-old was found dead at his Camelot Castle home in Plumstead on October 22 after taking his own life. His devastated family said the reformed hardman had taken the decision to "stop the ride" in an emotional statement.

Now, Courtney's former partner, Deborah Price, has spoken out about her relationship with the ex-gangster. The pair were in a relationship from 2013 to 2018, with Deborah a regular visitor to Camelot Castle.

"He could be really soppy and I think was a big softie deep down. We had some good times together and I loved Dave when I was with him," Deborah told Mail Online.

Deborah explained that Courtney had to contend with a number of health problems, including prostate cancer, heart surgery and arthritis. "I remember he always said he would rather end it himself than end up riddled with pain and unable to care for himself," she said.

Courtney, who had alleged links to the Kray twins, was also described as "very charismatic and charming" by his former girlfriend. "He made people feel good about themselves," Deborah said. "'He also provided people with advice on how to deal with various matters. He really was very good with people."

The reformer gangster was found dead at his home in south London after watching Charlton Athletic with pals just hours earlier. He described the occasion as a “cool, cool day” on Facebook, while grinning and enjoying the hospitality treatment in The Valley stadium.

He wrote on Facebook: "At Charlton today. Full works today three course meal and our man James company is Sponser for the game. Billingham communications .... an wat a cool cool day it's all turning out to be." His devastated family will now go down to watch Charlton face Bolton Wanderers on Saturday as part of a day of tributes.

A statement on X (formally Twitter) from the family reads: "On Saturday 28th October, members of Dave’s family and friends will be attending Charlton Athletic vs Bolton Wanderers at The Valley, Charlton. Dave spent his last day there and loved the many memories that he made over the years.

“Following on from this, at 1900 there will be a one thousand balloon launch from The Royal Oak pub in Charlton. This is in memory of Dave, organised by owner Kevin Latta. Dave was a regular at The Royal Oak and shared many happy times there amongst friends. Anyone is welcome.

“From 2100, a Celebration of Dave’s Life will take place at Dave’s Camelot Castle home in Plumstead. There will be a Book of Commemoration that all are welcome to sign and refreshments will be available. This event is open to anyone who wishes to pay their respects to Dave and share memories amongst friends and loved ones.”
