Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes following a gas leak at a nearby doctor's surgery.

A doctor's surgery in Vauxhall, south London, has suffered a gas leak, leading to around 200 people from neighbouring properties being evacuated as the fire service warned disruption could last the day.

Emergency services were first alerted to the incident in the early hours of this morning, and have been battling it in the hours since. A hundred metre cordon is in place and a respite centre has been set up for those kicked from their homes.

The disruption is expected to last at least all of today with noticeable delays and traffic in the area. Two people were assessed by ambulance workers at the scene but there have been no reported injuries.

In a statement, the London Fire Brigade said: "Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters are at the scene of a gas leak at a doctor's surgery on Jonathan Street in Vauxhall. Around 200 people from neighbouring residential buildings have been evacuated as a precaution and a 100 metre cordon is currently in place. A respite centre has been set up at a local church for those who have been displaced from their homes.

"Two people have been assessed by London Ambulance Service crews at the scene. A number of road closures are currently in place including Jonathan Street and surrounding roads.

"Crews are working alongside multi-agency service partners to make the scene safe. The Brigade was called at 0433. Crews from Lambeth and Soho fire stations remain at the scene."

The Met Police are also in attendance and said they were made aware of the gas leak around 5am this morning. They've asked people to avoid the area and said the residents were evacuated "as a precaution while engineers work to resolve the situation".

Lambeth Council said they were supporting residents affected by the gas leak and that work was "ongoing" to resolve the situation. One local councillor was out this morning as well, supporting residents who were affected.

Vauxhall surgery have been approached for comment.
