It was unclear which base the decommissioned device was swiped from.

Two heavy machine-guns, two Glock 9mm pistols, two SA-80 semi-automatic rifles, body armour, helmets and more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition have also vanished in the past four years.

The items have been taken from various military bases, Army barracks, ships and even a top-secret submarine base, a Freedom of Information request disclosed.

Separate figures show that in the past 12 months 185 laptops were either lost or stolen, along with 98 mobile phones, 70 computer hard drives and 30 memory sticks.

Colonel Phil Ingram, a former military intelligence officer, said: “It seems every year that the MoD has to confess to losing hundreds of laptops and memory sticks. It doesn’t matter how good the encryption is, all pose a potential security risk.”

The Ministry of Defence said: “We take the security of defence assets very seriously.

"If items are reported lost or missing due to suspected criminal activity, we will take the necessary steps to investigate and prosecute.”
