Who is Princess Leonor of Asturias and how old is she?

Princess Leonor of Asturias is part of the Spanish royal family.

She was born on October 31, 2005, in Hospital Ruber Internacional in Madrid, Spain.

She finished her IB Diploma programme at the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales in the summer of 2023.

On her 18th birthday this year (2023), she swore allegiance to her country’s Constitution, laying the groundwork for her eventual succession as queen when the time comes.

She will be the first Queen Regnant since her fourth great-grandmother Isabella II, who reigned from 1833 to 1868.

Princess Leonor pledged “to faithfully carry out my duties, to keep and uphold the Constitution and the laws and respect the rights of citizens and the autonomous communities and loyalty to the king.”

Francina Armengol, president of Cortes Generales, accepted her oath and replied, “The Cortes Generales have just received the oath that Your Highness has taken, in compliance with the Constitution, as heir to the Crown.

"Ladies and gentlemen. Long live the Constitution! Long live the King! Long live Spain!”

The ceremony was necessary for her to be able to succeed to the crown and someday become queen.

Defence Minister Margarita Robles said: "As in all parliamentary monarchies (the heir) has to have a military background and a military career.

"In due course, the commander-in-chief of the armed forces will be a woman, and in recent years we have been making a very important effort to incorporate women into the armed forces."

Princess Leonor enrolled at the General Military Academy of Zaragoza in August 2023.

There, she will spend three years of practical military experience, where she will also become commander-in-chief of the armed forces when she ascends the throne.
