It's the latest retailer to announce plans to shut up shop

A MAJOR discount supermarket with almost 1,000 branches will close its stores for much of the festive period.

Lidl will pull down the shutters on all of its shops on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

The retailer, which has 960 stores across the UK, said that most of its shops will also remain closed on Boxing Day.

Opening times will vary depending on where you live, so it's best to check the Lidl store finder tool on its website to avoid a wasted trip.

Lidl has closed its doors on Boxing Day for the past few years.

It came after fellow discounter Aldi and bargain retailers Poundland, Iceland, and Home Bargains announced that they would shut their doors on Boxing Day.

Almost all stores across the UK shut on Christmas Day, but a handful of retailers won't open on Boxing Day either.

Most of us will slowly return to usual working hours over the following week, as will UK shops and supermarkets.

But then the New Year hits, and shops will likely change their hours again.

This means customers must carefully plan their shopping trips from Boxing Day to New Year's Day.

So far this year, no other shops have revealed if they plan to close or stay open on Boxing Day or New Year's Day.

Last year, dozens of chains across the country made the decision to adjust their opening hours to give their workers a well-earned break.

Others, including Sainsbury's, Primark, Morrisons, and B&M, opted to operate with reduced hours instead.

We'll keep you updated on the major chains' plans for this year as they're announced.

Opening hours can vary from branch to branch, so as we get closer to Christmas, make sure to check your local store times before you make the trip.

Most big retailers will have their opening times listed on their websites nearer the time.

Meanwhile, Lidl has revealed its Christmas advert with an adorable animal on a mission and viewers say it’s better than M&S’.
