Carsley, 49, is now believed to be the club's next target to take up the seat in the dugout.

BBC reporter Aaron Paul has claimed that the England Under 21s coach has met with Stoke about the position.

He wrote: "Been told this morning that Stoke City have met England U21 head coach Lee Carsley, with a view to him becoming their new manager."

Carsley is yet to manage a club in England on a permanent basis.

He has worked as a caretaker at Coventry and Birmingham City before getting his current job with England's youth.
