THE Princess of Wales spoke about the “desperate” times families are suffering as she helped out at a baby bank yesterday.

Kate, 41, was visiting Sebby’s Corner in Barnet, North London, where she also dropped off 50 copies of children’s book The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark for kids to enjoy.

Speaking to parents and volunteers there, the princess praised the work baby banks do and called for them to be more “visible” in villages, towns and cities.

She added: “All those who are looking after young children and babies, it’s such a vital role you play.

“There are so many families in challenging circumstances. Every child should have the basic essentials. The needs are really huge.”

Kate, in a dark top with matching long skirt and heels, was there to raise awareness of baby banks as part of her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.

And she laughed as she got glitter on her face while making festive bows to decorate Christmas grottos.

Speaking about the volunteers who are essential to the success of baby banks, she said: “It’s amazing how generous people are. There is a real willingness to give back.”

Sebby’s founder Bianca Sakol added: “Baby banks are the backbone of society and I think the princess is doing amazing work highlighting their impact.

“We couldn’t do without the people, like Sun readers, who support us.

"We are nothing without people who donate and that’s why we need people to get behind this.”
