Open prisons are lower security jails where criminals are not confined to cells and are even granted leave into the community with specific conditions they return. Many lower-level offenders are sent to open prisons to free up space in higher category institutions for more serious offenders.
Gangsters ‘call for ceasefire’ after deadly Christmas Eve pub shootingLast month, police in Suffolk issued an appeal for three men wanted on recall to HMP Hollesley Bay, a Category D prison in Norfolk. Joshua Lewis Terry, 29, and Levi Mitchell, 39, both went on the run from sentences they were serving at the jail with members of the public again warned not to approach the men.
A third man, Aidan McGuinness also went on the run separately from the same prison on the same weekend. Both McGuinness and Terry were subsequently arrested in different parts of the country. Mitchell, who was serving a sentence for multiple burglary offences, stayed at large for three weeks before he was arrested in Harlow, Essex, earlier this month.
