Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's "loyal attack-dog" has misread the room and it could spell bad news for the couple, a royal expert has warned.

Today, royal biographer Omid Scobie has released his brand new book Endgame, which asserts that the future of the monarchy is "in a crisis" and it is in a "fight for survival". Mr Scobie co-authored Finding Freedom, a biography of the Sussexes which chronicled the couple in glowing terms, and they receive favourable treatment in his new book. He makes a series of allegations involving the Sussexes – including that Prince William and other family members "covertly sanctioned" leaks to reporters about Harry.

The book also claims that the elder brother ignored texts from Harry when the family were making their way to Balmoral before the late Queen died last year, and that Charles and Meghan exchanged letters in the wake of her interview with Oprah Winfrey. The alleged letters are said to reveal the identity of two people the duchess claims aired 'concerns' about the colour of then-unborn Prince Archie's skin.

The book comes as it has been suggested that Harry and Meghan are keen to make amends with the Royal Family and want to look forward to the future. But royal historian Dr Tessa Dunlop, who has read Endgame, believes this could be threatened by the release.

She told the Mirror: "The Omid Scobie 'Endgame' assault has been detonated and the Sussexes' most loyal attack-dog has laid bare his cast of villains just in time for Pantomime season – a 'cold' prince, a 'jealous' king, a 'tightly controlled' princess trussed up in a rotting monarchy.

"The timing could not be worse for Prince Harry. After the Duke’s full-scale attack on the royals in documentary and book form, recently the mood music around the Sussex camp has changed. A more conciliatory tone is in the air, backed up with news of a birthday phone call with the King and talk of Christmas invitations.

"Unfortunately no one appears to have briefed Omid, whose muck-raking book covers old ground: William is only in it for the Crown, 'coachable' Kate is a mere part-timer, while tawdry rumours of marital discord between the pair make Omid look no better than the tabloids he attacks.

"None of this would matter but for that fact that the journalist has had uncomfortably close contact with Meghan and Harry in the past. A High Court testimony confirmed as much; 'friends' were briefed by the Duchess for Omid’s first book 'Finding Freedom'."

Meanwhile, Tessa argues that the Sussexes maybe should have taken a leaf from Queen Victoria, who had a strict rule when it came to making friends. She explained: "It was Queen Victoria who cautioned her royal offspring: 'never make friendships…friendships and intimacies are very bad' often lead to great mischief’.

"If only Harry had paid a little more attention in his history classes and kept those pesky 'friends' and 'pals' at a safe distance. The Sussexes, with a hot new agent and production deals in the offing, may have entered a new phase, but Omid has not.

"He remains behind the curve, mud-slinging left, right and centre, concerned with only one thing: brand Omid Scobie. Minus any hint of remorse or self-reflection, he criticises Meghan and Harry’s communication strategy which, (in large part thanks to him) apparently 'strained their 'credibility'.

According to Omid, Prince William still has not read his brother’s book Spare. For a peaceful Christmas let’s hope Harry and the rest of the family decide to follow suit and give Endgame a wide berth. Whether Omid likes it or not, now is the time for everyone to move on."
