A MUM and daughter are suspected to have been killed by carbon monoxide at an East Lothian home.

The pair, named locally as Catherine Dalyrmple, 84, and Elizabeth Dalyrmple, 60, were found dead inside the home last Wednesday.

Last week's double tragedy shocked the quiet residential street after the pair were discovered in the house on Caponflat Crescent, Haddington.

The two women were found by a neighbour who was concerned after spotting a package left sitting on their doorstep, the Daily Record reports.

But the day after the tragedy, firefighters posted leaflets to neighbours offering free carbon monoxide testing, sparking fears this was what claimed the two lives.

One neighbour told the Record: "The fire brigade were there and the police stayed for three days. The windows were left open.

"We don’t know the facts but we’re assuming it was carbon monoxide. We all got fire brigade leaflets the day after. It was about doing a gas safety check for free."

Devastated neighbours have paid tribute to the pair following the tragedy.

Catherine was born in the house in 1939 and had lived there her whole life.

Elizabeth had moved into the home and cared for her mother.

One neighbour said: "It’s heartbreaking, a terrible tragedy. I’m still in shock."

Speaking about Catherine, who was also known as Malita, they said: "Malita was such a quiet, genteel person. She was a lovely woman and a good neighbour.

"She never forgot my girls with presents at Christmas and their birthdays and would come to my house on Christmas Day.

"Liz was her carer but they kind of looked after each other. She was quiet and devoted to her mum."

Cops are continuing to probe the deaths, which are being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 3.10pm on Wednesday, 13 December 2023, police were called to a house in Caponflat Crescent, Haddington, after concern was raised for the occupants within. On attendance, two women were found deceased in the home.

"At this time, police are treating their deaths as unexplained but not suspicious, however enquiries are ongoing.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
