The former winger started out at Ipswich before earning a big move to Newcastle, and also played for Charlton in the Prem.

He made 410 career appearances for seven different clubs but he now has a new love - Lego.

His new passion began when his parents-in-law gifted him a 6,000-piece Hogwarts Castle set, and now it is an activity he enjoys along with wife Rachel and their five kids.

Reflecting on his first set, Ambrose told the BBC: "It took me a long time, and people say it's cliché, but it was therapeutic.

"I sat there, spending time away from everyone, started doing it and thought it was amazing. It went from there."

The Ambrose now have quite the collection with a shelf that includes sets from famous films like Ghostbusters and the Marvel franchise.

They have now decided to go one step further by starting their own YouTube channel called "The Lego Family 7", which features kids Jess, Lily, Harry, Fred and George.

Ambrose says his wife is a Lego "addict" and the couple frequently gift each other sets.

He added: "She's now an addict, and she loves Lego.

"Every birthday, Christmas and Valentine's Day, we get each other some. It sounds strange, and I get a bit of grief from people who don't like Lego- but we love it."

Rachel did not deny her obsession, claiming she might love the toy even more than her husband does.

She said: "I didn't think it would be an obsession for me, but actually, I think I am maybe a little more obsessed than Darren. It's very sad, but I am addicted, and I absolutely love it."

Next Ambrose has his heart set on building Lego stadiums of the clubs he played for, and he would jump at the chance to build a set with David Beckham, a fellow Lego enthusiast.

He said: "He [Beckham] loves Lego.

"It's surprising, when you get into Lego, how much people are into it. I love it, I don't care who knows.

"I'd love to have the stadiums of the clubs I played for. Portman Road, St James' Park, Selhurst Park, the Valley and St Andrews.

"Some players come out of the game, and play golf, collect trainers, but we decided to collect Lego.

"I do miss football."
