Jurgen Klopp's single-word reaction to Liverpool moving top speaks volumes

Jurgen Klopp needed only one word to describe his feelings after Liverpool moved top of the Premier League table - and even then he didn't mean it.

"Fantastic," he said sarcastically. “I can barely keep may arms down!"

Goals from Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota saw Liverpool claim a 2-0 win over struggling Burnley at Turf Moor and move ahead of Arsenal - ahead of their meeting with West Ham on Thursday. But the Kop boss did admit: “Forty-two points. That’s really pleasing, that’s really cool because the first part of the season is done. It was absolutely all right what we did. Not perfect, but all right.

"It keeps us now that we cannot be more than a point away from the top of the table if Arsenal win, that’s within punching distance.”

The German was delighted by Liverpool’s display in their fourth game in 10 days, even if Burnley pushed them hard.

“We played a super game,” he said. “I really liked the game, but we should have scored more. But the game stayed open and Burnley had massive chances to score. But in the end, we deserved to win and it was two perfect goal scorers in Darwin and Diogo.”

Klopp also claimed it was “insane” Harvey Elliott’s strike was disallowed Klopp was incensed when referee Paul Tierney chalked off Elliott’s finish at 1-0 when told by VAR Simon Hooper that Mohamed Salah was offside.

Hooper caused outrage at Manchester City when he pulled them back for a foul on Erling Haaland when Jack Grealish was through in the final seconds of their draw against Tottenham.

“They will tell us again that it’s an offside situation or whatever,” said the Liverpool boss. “It’s insane - honestly. “This man, if he never played football, then it can happen. You think ‘offside rule, let me see, page seven, there’s somebody between him and the goalie’ - that’s ridiculous.

“We all need referees, but we need them with the right interpretation of the rules. How can you make this situation not a goal? That’s a clear goal.”
