One of these was Mrs Brenda Shelby, who was expecting twins with the help of fertility treatment - which was still very new at the time.

She was under the care of a top hospital in central London, but Dr Turner and his team were on hand to do some check ups.

Dr Turner was keen for her to stay at their facility, but her posh physician insisted she be transferred to his hospital, despite the incoming blizzard.

The ambulance set off in the snow, with Sister Julienne and Nurse Nancy inside with Brenda, while Dr Turner and his son followed behind in the car.

However, the snow meant they couldn't get very far quickly, and Brenda went into labour.

She gave birth to a son, but before her daughter arrived, a car swerved to dodge a man in the road and crashed into the ambulance.

While shaken, the women had to carry on with the labour, and Brenda's little girl was born safely.

Locals worked hard to remove the car from the ambulance's path, as Dr Turner insisted on it being redirected to the local hospital, as Brenda had given birth to a third child and was losing a lot of blood.

Thankfully, the path was cleared in time and Brenda reached the hospital, where she ended up giving birth to a fourth child, completing her set of quads.

Elsewhere, Sister Monica Joan left her companions concerned when she declared this year would be her "final Christmas".

Dr Turner declared she was depressed and that they needed to do something to bring her joy, and so they arranged a Victorian-style Christmas service like the one she could remember as a child and had shared in great detail with Nancy's daughter.

It did the trick, and the retired nurse declared at the end that all thoughts of it being her final Christmas had gone, allowing the other characters - and Call the Midwife viewers at home - to breath a sigh of relief that they would have her for a lot longer.

Call the Midwife is available on BBC iPlayer.
