Unfortunately, he didn't get to spend as much time with her as he would have liked as he had to solve a murder at a swanky villa.

Entrepreneur and family man, Gerry Stableforth was found dead in a ravine, leaving his wife Bella (Patsy Kensit), children Benjami and Mariana and niece Riley in shock.

The team set to work on cracking this mysterious death, but things took a further turn when the family’s visiting digital marketing guru, Debbie Clumson (Bronagh Waugh), suddenly disappeared.

Neville had to juggle the case with squeezing in some time with his mum, who had quickly made herself at home on the island and formed a friendship with Catherine.

Neville was also still processing having his heart broken at the end of the last series, but his mum encouraged him to not give hope that he would meet someone special in the future.

Her joy for life and love also rubbed off on D.S Naomi Thomas, who got a little drunk at the Christmas party at the end of the episode.

Swapping her work clothes for a stunning one shouldered yellow dress, Naomi confided in Officer Marlon Pryce: "I wish I was more like her."

As they watched Melanie pull out some mistletoe to kiss a hunky local, she said: "I mean, nothing bothers her you know? Does just as she pleases.

"Kisses who she wants, when she wants. I wish I was more like her Marlon."

Marlon replied: "Serg, you don't need to be like any body else. You're cool just the way you are."

Surprised, she asked: "Really? You think I'm cool just the way I am?"

When Marlon said he did, she suddenly leaned in and kissed him on the lips.

Blinking in shock as she pulled away, Marlon said: "OK, what just happened?"

Naomi looked sheepishly and took a swig of her drink, while Marlon coughed nervously as things immediately became awkward between them.

But their kiss didn't go unnoticed by Neville who was open-mouthed from across the bar.

He wasn't the only one as later, the Commissioner spoke to Neville and said: "Tell me Inspector, did I see D.S Thomas kissing Officer Pryce?"

When Neville confirmed he had, he added: "I thought so, did I also see your mother kissing someone herself?"

Neville again said that also happened, and the Commissioner joked: "Then, I may have to find some mistletoe myself!"

Death in Paradise airs on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.
