What is Zalando?

Zalando is an online retailer that sells shoes, fashion and beauty items across Europe.

The website sells a huge range of items, including women’s coats, men’s shoes, prom dresses and wedding dresses.

Shoppers can also purchase sports kit, including skiing clothes, and accessories such as sunglasses.

Several big-name brands, such as adidas, Coach, Dr Martens, and Puma, are sold on the site.

Items from UGG, Calvin Klein, Arket, and Nike can also be found there.

Zalando claims to sell over 1.8million product choices from 7,000 brands.

The retailer promises free delivery for orders over £35 and has a 100-day return policy.

Zalando was once known for its infamous "scream with joy!" TV advertising campaign in the 2010s.

The advert won a Dutch award for the most irritating advert - two years in a row - after the company launched in the Netherlands.

When was Zalando created?

Zalando was founded in 2008 by David Schneider and Robert Gentz.

It started as an online shoe shop before expanding to other clothing items.

In 2010, university friends Robert and David convinced another of their pals, Rubin Ritter, to join them as the third member of the Management Board.

The team then began expanding rapidly and Zalando began to conquer markets in Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.

According to the company’s site, Zalando now has more than 51 million active users in 25 European markets.

It also employs 16,000 people from around 140 countries.

Zalando’s headquarters are in Berlin but it also has offices in Dublin, Ireland, Helsinki, Finland, and Zurich, Switzerland.

The company’s website claims that they made €10.3bn in sales in 2022, with 261million orders being places.

Zalando is very popular in European countries like Germany and Switzerland where its biggest markets are.

Since its launch in Britain it has expanded to include many beloved UK brands, like Missguided and River Island, alongside the international names it sells.

Is Zalando a legitimate website?

Zalando is a legitimate and successful website.

But the retailer’s website promises its customers to trade with reputable manufacturers who provide the highest quality of products.

Their website states: "We do not sell fake, counterfeit, or replica goods".

The company also ensures the security of customer details.

A statement on the website reads: "We use 128-bit SSL security encryption in our checkout process.

"This encrypts the personal information you provide us, ensuring that it is safe and not accessible by any third parties".

The site further assures customers that their data is used "solely for the processing of your order and to continue to improve our services".

A Frequently Asked Question section on Zalando’s website states: "Under no circumstances will your personal information be disclosed to third parties without your consent".

Zalando urges customers to refer to their terms and conditions for more details.

Zalando receives mixed reviews on sites like Trustpilot but the majority of complaints appear to be related to slow or late delivery.

On the Apple Store it has a score of 4.3/5 stars, and on Google Play a rating of 4.5/5.
