A mobility scooter rider has died after being struck by an HGV as she used a pedestrian crossing.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the incident on Spotland Road in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, at around 12.20pm this afternoon (February 1). Pictures from the scene showed a wagon and a police tent inside a cordon near the junction with High Street.

A 63-year-old woman who was using a pedestrian crossing point has now died, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed. Police Constable Philip Drummond of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Tragically a woman has died after the incident earlier today.

“My thoughts are with her family and friends at this devastating time. We’re already following up on a number of lines of enquiry and would urge anyone with information to come forward to assist us.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said two fire engines, from Rochdale and Littleborough stations, as well as the technical response unit from Ashton-under-Lyne fire station, attended for around 30 minutes to assist police. Tonight, the A680 Spotland Road remains closed in both directions, causing heavy traffic between Sheriff Street and St Marys Gate. Bus services were diverted to avoid the area.
