Dramatic video has emerged of a tornado touching down near the state line between Georgia and Florida as severe weather continues to thrash the area.

Snaps and video of severe weather have been taken as thunderstorms and hail pounded the southeast on Sunday, with weather warnings in force across multiple counties. A video of what appears to be a tornado in downtown Valdosta, Georgia was captured by Roy Kirkland on Sunday evening.

A Lowndes County Sheriff official told local media that the apparent tornado damaged several homes. The clip sent to Storyful shows the downtown area of Valdosta, about 15 miles north of the Florida state line, from the front seat of a moving vehicle. The sky is filled with dark, looming storm clouds although it does not appear to be currently raining.

In the centre of the shot, on the skyline above the urban rooftops, a massive column of cloud appears to be stretching toward the ground looking like a tornado touching down.

Sunday afternoon saw widespread storms across Florida with the bad weather lasting into the evening sparking weather warnings for parts of Central Florida including Orlando, Flagler, and Brevard counties.

A line of storms produced devastating weather in North Florida and southern Georgia, with tornadoes spotted near Valdosta, Georgia, on Sunday afternoon.

The thunderstorms were expected to move toward the Florida coast over the following few hours with isolated an tornado risk continuing through 9pm.

Areas of southern Georgia, North Florida, Southwest Florida and South Florida could see some isolated flooding into Monday, forecasters have warned.
