Margrethe II, full name Margrethe Alexandrine Þorhildur Ingrid, became Queen of Denmark in 1972.

The royal, who was born on April 16, 1940, is the daughter of Frederik IX, who died in 1972, and Queen Ingrid, born Princess of Sweden, who died in 2000.

She became Europe's longest-serving head of state and the world's longest-serving female head of state upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

She has two sons, Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim, with her late husband, Prince Henrik.

Her motto is "God’s help, the love of The People, Denmark’s strength".

Margrethe announced she would step down from the role during her New Year's Eve speech in 2023.

She officially gave up the throne on January 14, 2024.

She has ruled as Denmark's monarch for 52 years and since the death of Queen Elizabeth in 2022, Margrethe became the world's longest-serving current female head of state.

Frederik André Henrik Christian, King of Denmark, is the eldest son of Queen Margrethe II and the late Prince Henrik of Denmark.

He was born on May 26, 1968.

Since the education of his mother, King Frederik X is now the head of Europe's oldest monarchy.

The prince married Mary, Queen of Denmark, born Mary Elizabeth Donaldson, in 2004.

The couple met at a pub in Sydney, Australia, when the Crown Prince was visiting the continent during the 2000 Olympics.

Mary was working at a marketing firm at the time.

Frederik and Mary have four children; Christian, Isabella, Vincent and Josephine.

Their eldest, Prince Christian, was born on October 15, 2005, and resides at Herlufsholm Boarding School in Næstved.

Princess Isabella was then born on April 21, 2007 and still lives with her family in Copenhagen.

Mary is Queen of Denmark as the wife of King Frederik X.

She was a student at the University of Tasmania, where she graduated with a combined Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws degree.

She then enrolled in a graduate programme and completed her certificates in advertising from the Advertising Federation of Australia.

Mary embarked on a career in advertising and worked for several Australian and global advertising agencies.

The new King and Queen of Denmark first met in 2000.

Prince Joachim of Denmark is the second son of Margrethe II and the late Prince Henrik of Denmark.

He is fifth in the line of succession to the Danish throne, following his older brother, King Frederik, and Frederik and Mary's four children.

Prince Joachim was born on June 7, 1969, and, like his brother, he has four children.

The royal shares sons Count Nikola and Count Felix with his ex-wife Alexandra Christina Manley, who he divorced in 2005.

He also has a son, Count Henrik, and daughter, Countess Athena, who he shares with second wife Marie Cavallier. The couple married in 2007.

In 2022, the Margrethe II took the controversial decision to strip Prince Joachim's children of their royal titles.

She said the move was to allow her grandchildren to live normal lives without royal obligations.

Princess Benedikte, born on April 29, 1944, is the younger sister of the former Queen, Margrethe II.

She is tenth in the line of succession to the Danish throne and may act as regent when the King is abroad.

She and her late husband, Richard, 6th Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, had three children.
