Why did James Corden leave The Late Late Show?

James Corden announced he was stepping down from The Late Late Show in April 2022.

At the time he told viewers that when he started the show it was always going to be a "journey" and never his "final destination."

Sources close to the star told The Sun that his decision to quit had been a joint decision from James and his wife Jules.

They said, "James and Jules have had barely any time to see their families in the UK over the past few years due to his work schedule."

The comedian appeared to confirm this on The Drew Barrymore Show, telling the host that he didn't want his work to come "at the expense of his children and family."

Was James Corden fired?

A US TV source close to the situation told The Sun, "Everyone at CBS is utterly devastated.

"Execs did their utmost to keep him on. James turned down a multi-million pound, multi-year deal."

"Instead, he’s agreed to a hugely-lucrative, 12-month package."

“He will go out with a bang and is determined to make the show the best ever in the coming months."

James said of quitting the show, "It's been a crazy eight years."

"In one sense it feels like it's gone like that and in another, I feel like I don't remember what life was like before being here."

When asked by Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz, what he would miss the most about doing the show, he said, "More than anything I'm just gonna miss my friends that I've made here at the show."

"I'm gonna miss the feeling of coming into this office every day and knowing that someone's gonna make me laugh."

When was James Corden's last show?

Corden hosted his last show on Thursday, April 27, 2023.

Prior to his final show, Corden recorded the final segment of his "Carpool Karaoke" with singer Adele.

In the emotional chat, the host and singer were left teary-eyed as they discussed their friendship.

During the final installment, Adele revealed how James and his wife had been "integral" in looking after her and her son after she split from husband, Simon Konecki.

James also told the singer about his reason for leaving the show, saying, "It's been a brilliant adventure but I'm just so certain that it's time."

"With people getting older, people that we miss - it's time to go home."

On November 1, 2023, it was announced that comic Taylor Tomlinson would host the new nighttime reboot that will replace Corden’s show.

CBS finally picked a host after auditioning numerous comedians including X Mayo and Ricky Velez.

After Midnight is set to premiere on January 16, 2024, in the 12:30 a.m. slot.

The show will make its debut nearly nine months after Corden said goodbye to his late-night audience.

After Midnight is a reboot of the Comedy Central show @midnight that aired from 2013 to 2017.
