Sylvester Stallone has revealed the agonising pain he was left in following a stunt that went wrong on set.

Fourteen years after the Hollywood icon was injured in a scene alongside WWE star "Stone Cold" Steve Austin", he has gone under the knife for the seventh time. After his latest operation, he's warned fellow stars from doing their own stunts and joked his next role could be as the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Sly opened up about his injuries in the new series of The Family Stallone. He recalled how the former WWE star body slammed him on the set of the first Expendables movie in 2010. The incident left Sly with a fracture in his neck.

Discussing the stunt on his new series, the actor said: "I did stupid stuff. I was directing Expendables and like an idiot I’m doing take ten, take whatever, and I remember one slam and I could actually feel one ‘bang’. Steve knew. I never recovered from Expendables 1. After that film, it was never physically the same. I’ve warned people — don’t do your own stunts."

Following the failed fight scene, Sly had to get a metal plate inserted into his neck. He has since had to have spinal fusions and treatment for dislocated shoulders.

Opening up on the fear she faces every time her man goes into the operating theatre, his wife Jennifer Flavin said her husband tries to "mask the pain". She admits he tries to "pretend like it didn't happen".

"He doesn’t like people to know he’s had so many back surgeries. It’s very scary for our family every time Sly has to go through surgery, because you never know . . . no one knows."

His 21-year-old daughter Scarlett candidly admitted she can't remember a time her dad wasn't in pain. "My whole childhood, he’s been in pain. He did everything he could to push through the pain and be present but I couldn’t imagine every waking moment you are just hurting."

On Instagram recently, Sly took time to recognise the Philadelphia Flyers for mimicking his character Rocky's famous training montage. Labelling the tribute "great" Sly told the team to "keep punching" as the squad ran from the team bus wearing the all-grey training gear worn by Rocky as he took on the famous steps in Philly leading to the entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
