Legendary NFL quarterback Tom Brady has praised former teammate Matthew Slater for his 'perfect career' in a touching tribute following the latter's recent retirement announcement.

Brady worked with Slater for twelve years at the New England Patriots, where they shared many triumphs including three Super Bowl titles. Brady said: "A true champion. The best teammate and an even better man. Congratulations on the perfect career."

Despite originally being drafted as a wide receiver, Slater became known for his incredible skills in another position. He was particularly recognised for racking up numerous tackles on special teams, cementing his name as perhaps the best gunner in NFL history.

His notable contributions didn't go unnoticed - Slater received numerous accolades throughout his 16-year-long career, such as being named a 10-time Pro Bowler and a five-time All-Pro first-teamer.

The timing of Slater's retirement also coincides with a period of change within the Patriots, with Jerod Mayo having recently taken over from Bill Belichick as head coach. Having been part of the team for so long, Slater's departure will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact.

In his goodbye message, Slater shared: "I have given all that I possibly can to respect and honor the game. Though it is time for my relationship with the game to evolve, the love I have for it will last a lifetime. In 2008, I came here as a young man with hopes and dreams. In 2024, I can retire knowing this experience has exceeded any hope or dream I ever had."

Last year, Belichick praised Slater as the best ever in special teams, saying: "I've been very fortunate. I feel like I coached the best offensive player - best player in football in Tom (Brady), the best defensive player in football in LT (Lawrence Taylor), and the best special teams player in football in Matt Slater."

It's expected that Slater's No.18 shirt will be hung up for good, just like Brady's 12 and Gronkowski's 87, after their amazing time with the team. The Patriots won all six of their Super Bowl titles with Belichick in charge, and Slater got to lift the trophy in 2015, 2017, and 2019. The first win was especially sweet as it ended a decade-long wait for the top prize.
