TAKEAWAY couriers across the UK plan to strike every Friday and bank holiday until they get a pay rise, The Sun can reveal.

Around 5,000 in London and others in Liverpool, Newcastle, Brighton and Oxford will refuse to pick up orders from 5pm until 10pm on those days.

The drivers and moped riders are campaigning for a fee of at least £5 per order, but Uber currently pays just £2.80 and Deliveroo £3.15.

Organiser Marcio Silva, 50, who works part-time for Uber and Deliveroo in Kensington, west London, said: “This will be huge, believe me.

“Strikes will continue every Friday and Bank Holiday until they increase the money they pay riders.

“At the moment, Uber pays a minimum of £2.80 and Deliveroo pays £3.15.

“We need a minimum of £5.

“About 5,000 drivers in London are expected to participate in the strike, which is confirmed in Brighton, Oxford, Liverpool, Newcastle too.

“It will also take place in Portugal and New York.”

Fellow rider Dyogo Costa added: “We’re not backing down.

“The longer they delay, the stronger we’ll get.”

It will be the third day of action this month — including Valentine’s Day — by the couriers, who are generally classed as self-employed contractors.

Delivery firms insist many earn above the living wage on average.

Just Eat said its pay structure is regularly reviewed.

Deliveroo will enter collective bargaining on rider pay with the GMB trade union in April.

A spokesperson insisted: “Rider retention rates are high and the overwhelming majority of riders tell us that they are satisfied working with us.”

Stuart said it remains "committed to providing competitive earnings opportunities” and will be “working with clients to minimise disruption during the impacted period”.

An Uber Eats spokesperson said: "We offer a flexible way for couriers to earn by using the app when and where they choose.

“We know that the vast majority of couriers are satisfied with their experience on the app, and we regularly engage with couriers to look at how we can improve their experience."
