Could this be the first year the Rolling Stones ever win a Brit Award?
The rockers have received their first nomination in over a decade in the Best Alternative/Rock category, having first been nominated at the debut Brit Awards way back in 1977. The nominees in the Alt/Rock category are decided by the Brits Voting Academy but the winner will be decided by the public via a social media vote.
Until now, the Stones have never won a Brit award determined by the academy. In October, thanks to the success of last year’s Hackney Diamonds – their first album in 18 years – they were given the Brits billion award, which is given to acts who achieve more than a billion streams.
The accolade is determined on data alone rather than by the ceremony’s 1,200-strong academy, and the BPI noted the group’s most streamed songs include Paint It Black and (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, which were first released in the 1960s before the awards began, and Start Me Up, which was released in 1981.
In 2013, the Stones lost out to Coldplay in the Best Live Act category, which was their first nomination for 17 years. And back at the first-ever ceremony in 1977, they lost the Best Group award to the Beatles. They were also nominated in 1995 for the Best British Video award for Love Is Strong.
