'Lee Anderson comments show Nasty Party is back - even Tories are sickened'

Anderson's allegations were racist, Islamophobic, and defamatory

The Nasty Party is back. Nothing shows that more clearly than in the bile spouted by loudmouth Tory Lee Anderson.

His baseless allegations against London Mayor Sadiq Khan were racist, Islamophobic and defamatory. They serve only to pour fuel on the fire of anti-Muslim hatred. Former PM Theresa May, while in opposition, branded the Tories the Nasty Party. It is even truer today as they head for opposition again.

Anderson could have avoided being stripped of the whip by apologising for his vile comments. His refusal to do so proves this was no mere slip of the tongue. But he is not alone in playing the race card as the Tories stoop ever lower. Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman made a similarly ludicrous claim last week about Keir Starmer being “in hock to the Islamists”.

And Liz Truss was disgracefully silent in a US interview when far-right rabble-rouser Tommy Robinson was hailed as a hero. Tory peer Gavin Barwell described Anderson’s comments as a “despicable slur.” But he is no longer No10 chief of staff. Sajid Javid said Anderson was peddling “ridiculous” nonsense. But he is no longer in the Cabinet.

Moderate Tory MPs are deserting in droves, unable to stomach the effluent flowing from party right-wingers now holding Rishi Sunak hostage. This is too dangerous to dismiss as desperate election garbage when the war in Gaza means emotions are high and community tensions are at breaking point.

Anti-Muslim hate crime has tripled since the Hamas massacre on October 7 last year. Anti-Semitic incidents are up sixfold. The mayor is right. This country is smouldering and incendiary language could set it alight. If the “nasties” stay in the Tory driving seat, the Conservatives deserve to be wiped out by the good and decent voters of this country.

Stand by ally

Ukraine is entering its third year of bitter and bloody war with no sign of an end. Britain has already given £7billion in support and we must not let up on that either. There is a serial killer on the loose in the Kremlin and opposition leader Alexei Navalny was his latest victim in a long line.

Vladimir Putin is not just a cold-hearted murderer but one so brazen he leaves calling cards on his crimes so the world knows he is responsible – polonium for Alexander Litvinenko, Novichok for the Skripals and Dawn Sturgess. There is no appeasing such a man, which is why we must stand by Ukraine for as long as it takes to defeat him.

Choc and law

Supermarkets are fixing security tags to chocolate Easter eggs to deter thieves out to steal them by the dozen to sell them on. It sounds like a serious crackdown.
