Angry Liverpool fans missed kick-off at the Carabao Cup final due to delays getting into Wembley Stadium.

It is believed the delay stemmed from some supporters being unable to scan their digital tickets as barcodes had been downloaded onto mobile devices, rather than the appropriate QR codes. Some fans were forced to wait for the Wembley ticket office to provide them with a paper alternative so they could enter the stadium.

This created a backlog as fans tried to get inside the ground, with Liverpool's official X/ Twitter account writing: "If your ticket is showing a barcode, please remove from the wallet and re-download from the original email. The ticket should then show a QR code which will allow entry into the turnstile."

Fans vented their fury online, making clear that digital tickets sent out by the club had let them down. One tweeted: "S*** show at Wembley. Thousands of tickets not working as they downloaded a barcode rather than a QR code.

"Thousands of tickets not working as they downloaded a barcode rather than a QR code. I'm one of the lucky ones who got there early. Football fans as usual messed around and this could be a massive safety problem later on."

Less than 15 minutes before the first whistle was blown, one Reds fan in attendance wrote: "We are stranded outside. This is not making sense." This sentiment was echoed by another, who wrote: "What a nightmare for the fans."

Some supporters called for kick-off to be delayed, but that plea was ignored. The kick-off time had already been changed once, with the clash initially scheduled to take place at 4:30pm.

However, it was brought forward by 90 minutes at the request of the Metropolitan Police, who deemed this a "high-risk" fixture. The authorities want to reduce the amount of time supporters would be able to drink ahead of kick-off, amid fears of clashes between the two sets of supporters.

On the pitch, Liverpool claimed glory in the final as they saw off Chelsea 1-0. Virgil van Dijk headed the winner deep into extra time having seen an earlier goal ruled out by VAR.
