Gakpo, 23, was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer.

Erik ten Hag was keen on raiding PSV Eindhoven for their star man.

However, United decided to pursue Ajax’s Antony instead, leaving Gakpo on ice until January.

But the Glazers’ decision to sell up meant Ten Hag was left short on funds this winter.

And after Gakpo impressed for Holland at the World Cup last month, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp pounced with lightning speed.

The versatile forward, who mainly operates out wide but can play as a No9, has now lifted the lid on his surprise Anfield move.

Gakpo admits he was fully expecting United to come back in for him again after their summer U-turn.

And the ace also revealed he had an offer on the table from struggling Leeds.

But Gakpo feels it has all worked out for the best, with Liverpool ready to rise back up the table and challenge for honours once again.

Gakpo declared: “It was difficult this summer. It was a very intense period.

“I tried to find my peace but it was difficult. I thought I was going to Man Utd, but in the end it didn’t work out.

“Leeds came in. They are a good club but I asked myself should I really go there, and when you have a lot of doubts it is not good.”
