Ultravox legend Chris Cross has died, it's been announced.

His death was shared on Monday night with the musician, whose real name was Chris Allen, passing away on March 25. Currently, the cause of Chris' death remains unknown.

His former bandmate, Ultravox frontman Midge Ure has now shared a tearful tribute. Midge, 70, said: "We worked together, we played together, made music and directed videos together. We were instant friends as well as Ultravox comrades. Even after years apart we managed to pick up where we left off like the years in between never existed. You were the glue that held the band together.

"You were the logic in the madness and the madness in our lives. It was great to know and grow with you. You are loved and missed old friend." Fans have since also shared tributes, with many referencing Chris' career and achievements.

One fan penned: "Such devastating news. Great bass player and one of the most endearing images at Live Aid was the joy on his face as he was performing." A second added: "So sad to read this Midge. I’ll never forget one lovely Sunday afternoon at his garden party, way back in the Vienna days, the white suits and his beautiful country cottage. I have a great photo of you both from that day. I’m so sorry."

"Such sad news today, as soon as I started reading straight away it took me back to the love's great adventure video where Chris would swing from a tree and rescue the guys, just to jump up into view with a big grin on his face, I'm absolutely gutted today, rip Chris Cross on bass guitar," wrote another. Meanwhile, a fourth penned: "I'm shocked and saddened at Chris's passing. Ultravox were part of the soundtrack of my teens and I still love your music now. My thoughts are with Chris's family and with Midge, Billy and Warren. Thank you Chris for your phenomenal music. Rest in peace."

Chris, who was born in 1952, joined the band Tiger Lily back in 1974 before the group changed their name to Ultravox in the 1980s. He appeared alongside frontman Dennis Leigh and guitarist Stevie Shears before Warren Cann and William 'Billy' Currie became members of the group.

The group, who were rocketed to fame after their first album took off were later joined by Midge in 1979, with the star performing vocals, guitar and keys for the band. But their journey to fame saw them catapulted to the top of the charts following their fourth album, Vienna, which spawned the lead single.

Having split in 1996, the band went on to reunite in 2008 before heading out on tour the following year and also released their final album, Brilliant, in 2012, hitting number 21 on the Official UK Charts. Away from music, Chris studied psychology at college and obtained a qualification in the subject.
