Gogglebox's George never got over step-dad's death or recovered from fame

Gogglebox's Linda Gilbey has opened up about the tragic death of her son, George.

The Channel 4 star died last week after a fall from height while working in Shoebury, Essex. Since his tragic passing, friends and family have rallied around his loved ones and created a fundraiser to help cover the costs of his funeral. Now, his devastated mother, Linda, has spoken for the first time as she described her late son as having "buckets of personality."

But while George was known to many for his appearance on the telly-watching show and Celebrity Big Brother, his mum admits he struggled to cope with the fame that he found at a young age. He "did more in his 40 years than people do in 90," she said, adding: "He's even had dinner with the Prince of Dubai!"

Despite George's fame, he returned to a regular job and had been attempting to "rebuild his life" away from the cameras for his young daughter, whom he welcomed in 2016. But Linda explained that following the death of George's beloved step-dad Pete McGarry in 2021, he never recovered.

She said: "He was crazy, but after coming out of showbiz, he couldn't get his life back together. He just couldn't get over the death of Pete." Pete died aged 71 following a brave battle with bowel cancer. Speaking about George's life after ditching fame, she said: "Amelie was his absolute world. He lived for that little girl and his mum.

"George was a real contradiction he was so funny and so intelligent. A lot of people don't know how intelligent George was. He was smart, which allowed him to be quick-witted and he was loud and outgoing, but at the same time very sensitive. He helped others, but he struggled himself."

Following his death, Essex Police released a statement, which read: "We received a report of an incident at Campfield Road in Shoebury at around 10am this morning (27 March), during which a man who was working at height had fallen and sustained an injury. The ambulance service including air ambulance were in attendance. Sadly, the man died at the scene. We will continue liaising with partners including the Health and Safety Executive. A cordon remains in place at the scene."

The force's new statement, shared on Thursday afternoon, read: "As part of our ongoing investigation into the death of a man in Campfield Road, Shoebury on Wednesday 27 March, we have arrested a man in their 40s from the Witham area on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. This is a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive and our enquiries are ongoing."

He leaves behind his mum, daughter Amelie Iris, seven, and foster brothers Jamie, Mickey, Lee, Mo, Chriss Matt, Bradley, and sisters Jackie and Beth.
