Strange moment skyline lit up by unidentified 'space debris' after rocket launch

A captivating video shows the moment the California skyline was illuminated with unidentified "space debris" shortly after a rocket launch.

Jenna Kushi, 30, captured this extraordinary occurrence on her phone at 1:30am local time in Camarillo, Ventura County, on April 2. The viewing came shortly after the launch of a SpaceX rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base at 7:30pm on April 1.

Residents across Southern California reported witnessing glittering streaks resembling those documented in Jenna's video, streaking across the sky during the early hours of the next day.

Jenna, an ENT specialist, shared her experience: "I couldn't tell if it was some kind of rocket or shooting stars - then it just burst into a bunch of pieces. It was pretty cool."

In the footage she captured, Jenna can be heard humorously saying "It's gonna fall on us we're all gonna die," as the debris seemingly ascends upwards, leaving behind an illuminated trail.

SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, launched its Falcon 9 rocket loaded with 22 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit on Monday, April 1 at 7:30pm PT, from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

The launch, which had been postponed twice because of weather conditions, was the 32nd Falcon 9 flight of 2024, and the 21st dedicated to building out the Starlink megaconstellation.

The viewing comes just weeks after an object fell from the sky piercing through the roof and two stories of a family's home in Naples, Florida. The round-shaped object weighing almost 2 pounds is believed to be piece of debris from the International Space Station.

A Nest home security camera recorded the crash's sound at 2:34 pm local time (19:34 UTC) on March 8, matching the time when the US Space Command detected the reentry of space debris from the space station.

At that time, the debris was over the Gulf of Mexico, heading towards southwest Florida. The space junk consisted of depleted batteries from the ISS attached to a cargo pallet, which was meant to return to Earth in a controlled manner.

However, due to several delays, the cargo pallet missed its scheduled departure, forcing NASA to jettison the batteries from the space station in 2021, causing an unguided reentry, per the European Space Agency.

Alejandro Otero, whose son was in the house when the object came crashing down, told WINK News: "It was a tremendous sound. It almost hit my son. He was two rooms over and heard it all.

"Something ripped through the house and then made a big hole on the floor and on the ceiling. When we heard that, we were like, impossible, and then immediately I thought a meteorite.

"I was shaking. I was completely in disbelief. What are the chances of something landing on my house with such force to cause so much damage. I’m super grateful that nobody got hurt."
