The journalist, originally from Wexford in Ireland, was out running when he collapsed after suffering a suspected aneurysm, reports STV News.

He died yesterday with his family by his side.

Nick was known for presenting Reporting Scotland, Drivetime, the Nine and Seven Days, as well as Good Morning Scotland on BBC Radio Scotland.

He was a keen fitness enthusiast and shared many posts on his social channels of him running, hiking and wild swimming around Scotland.

In a statement, Head of News and Current Affairs Gary Smith said: "Nick has been a wonderful colleague.

"He was a hugely talented journalist, presenter and author – and one of those rare people who light up the lives of everyone around them.

"Our hearts go out to his parents, to his partner and all his family and friends".

STV's Head of News and Current Affairs Linda Grimes-Douglas told of the "sombre" atmosphere in the newsroom, while staff at the BBC will hold a "minute of reflection" after today's Reporting Scotland airs.

Nick's close pal and former colleague Emma Cameron remembered his passion for "musical theatre, Irish culture, journalism and food.”

Weather presenter Philip Petrie said: "There were countless early Good Morning Britain shifts he and I shared, where he would keep the weary team amused with stories, pranks and even some renditions of Disney classics."

Nick worked in broadcasting for more than a decade.

The award-winning presenter also wrote a number of children's books about journalism.

He famously got the giggles in 2017 while live on STV News.

Nick was reading a story about a nude pensioner and his wife who went on a late-night rampage at a plush Perthshire hotel.

He had previously spent two years reporting and presenting RTE News2day.

He later left his staff post at the BBC to focus on writing but continued to present on a freelance basis.

Paying tribute at First Minister's Questions this afternoon, Humza Yousaf told the chamber: "On behalf of the Scottish Government and the party I lead, I wanted to say how sad we were to learn of the loss of Nick Sheridan.

"Nick was an extremely talented journalist and he will be greatly missed.

"Many of us will have been questioned by Nick quite robustly no doubt, whether it was on BBC Drivetime or on many of the other programmes he presented.

"My thoughts are with his family, his many friends and his colleagues at what will undoubtedly be a very sad time".

Pal Connor Gillies wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "A uniquely talented broadcaster, writer and journalist but above all a throughout decent, funny, thoughtful pal who was great fun.

"An absolute pleasure knowing Nick. He thought of everyone before himself.

"Will forever remember the outrageous antics on a night out."

TV and radio presenter Amy Irons said: "Absolutely devastated. The world has lost one of its brightest human beings and journalism has lost one of the most talented people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.

"We are all going to miss you so much Nick."

Former First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon wrote: "So terribly sad to read this. It is truly awful. Nick was young, talented, vivacious, and full of potential.

"What a horrible, senseless loss. My thoughts are with his family, colleagues and many friends."

Siobhan Synnot put: "Very sad news that BBC Scotland presenter and children's author Nick Sheridan has died.

"Nick was a bright spot in any studio and an enthusiastic interviewer on air.

"Love and sympathy to his friends, family, and colleagues."

BBC Scotland colleague Fiona Stalker said: "There are no words.

"He was so very loved. I am so thankful for every minute with him. The very best."
