The journalist, from Wexford in Ireland, was out running when he collapsed after suffering a suspected aneurysm, reports STV News.

He died yesterday with his family by his side.

Nick, a keen runner who also enjoyed open water swimming, was known for presenting Reporting Scotland, Drivetime, the Nine and Seven Days.

His devastated friends and colleagues reposted a clip of the talented broadcaster performing a moving rendition of Caledonia on his piano.

The presenter wrote alongside the footage, originally shared in April 2020: "Three years living in Scotland. What was meant to be a year here has…gotten out of hand.

"To all the new family and friends I’ve found here, let me tell you that I love you!"

Sharing the video on X, formerly Twitter, BBC journalist Fiona Stalker said: "Love this guy".

The BBC's Lesley Roy added: "Nick, you were such an amazing, talented kind-hearted and funny guy.

"You always greeted everyone with a smile and everybody loved you. What a loss - you'll be so missed."

SNP candidate for East Kilbride and Strathaven Grant Costello added: "Would be a nice tribute for Nick for BBC Scotland News to have this as the outro tonight".

Meanwhile, Catriona Stewart put: "Nick was a man of many, many talents - not just a brilliant, bright journalist but musical too".

Nick worked in broadcasting for more than a decade.

The award-winning presenter also wrote a number of children's books about journalism.

He famously got the giggles in 2017 while live on STV News.

Nick was reading a story about a nude pensioner and his wife who went on a late-night rampage at a plush Perthshire hotel.

He had previously spent two years reporting and presenting RTE News2day.

He later left his staff post at the BBC to focus on writing but continued to present on a freelance basis.

Paying tribute at First Minister's Questions this afternoon, Humza Yousaf told the chamber: "On behalf of the Scottish Government and the party I lead, I wanted to say how sad we were to learn of the loss of Nick Sheridan.

"Nick was an extremely talented journalist and he will be greatly missed.

"Many of us will have been questioned by Nick quite robustly no doubt, whether it was on BBC Drivetime or on many of the other programmes he presented.

"My thoughts are with his family, his many friends and his colleagues at what will undoubtedly be a very sad time".
