A GROUNDBREAKING plane with a "blended-wing" body, capable of carrying 250 people, has been being cleared to fly.

The Pathfinder will soon be seen soaring through California skies after aviation company JetZero received FAA approval to start tests.

Pathfinder is a 1:8-scale plane created to demonstrate a futuristic aircraft designed by aviation company JetZero.

It has now been granted a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airworthiness certificate, meaning test flights are imminent.

The jetliner is unlike any other aircraft currently on the market, with passengers set to enjoy a massive cabin with theatre-like seats.

It resembles a design used by military aircraft such as the iconic B-2 bomber.

From above, the plane looks a bit like a stingray, with a flat belly that smoothly blends out into a pair of wide wings.

There are many benefits to the plane's bizarre shape which make it attractive to commercial aircraft giants Boeing and Airbus.

It is a hybrid plane - a cross between a flying wing and a traditional "tube and wing" - so can cruise at higher altitudes on less fuel.

The plane's blended wing allows the entire aircraft to generate lift, minimising drag, which "helps to increase fuel economy and creates larger payload (cargo or passenger) areas in the centre body portion of the aircraft", according to Nasa.

The plane is more aerodynamically stable than others, so does not require a tail wing or large engines.

JetZero being given the go-ahead by the FAA might help to make its ambitious goal of putting a blended-wing aircraft into service by 2030 a reality.

The unique aircraft is a collaborative effort by JetZero, Nasa, and the US Air Force.

JetZero founder Mark Page said previously: "The blended wing is 50 per cent more efficient.

"It uses half the fuel, makes half the carbon dioxide compared to a tube-and-wing aircraft, frankly, even with the same engines. Fuel is the largest line item on an airline's profit and loss statement."

He added: "A JetZero blended wing cuts that line item in half.

"That's not just a competitive advantage; in the future, it'll be survival."

The first JetZero aircraft expected to be created is the Z-5, which has a wide single deck and a range of at least 5,000 nautical miles, and can carry up to 250 passengers.

Its wingspan is close to 200 feet and its body length is shorter than the Boeing 767 - which it is intended to replace.

JetZero said the Z-5 "will be about half the weight and require half the power of aircraft it replaces, such as the 767".

Airports may have to tweak their bays ever so slightly to fit the wider-than-normal aircraft.

The newly FAA-approved Pathfinder is a 12.5 per cent-scale version of the full-scale demonstrator, expected to take flight by 2027, and will have a wingspan of 23 feet.

It comes as plans for other futuristic planes are revealed, including for a "wonky wing" supersonic aircraft.

The "wonky wing" plane only has one wing, which rotates on a centre pivot - similar to a helicopter.

Another incredible "ring-wing" plane of the future also only has one wing, allowing for tiny runways, smooth landings, and less fuel use.

The Lockheed Ring Wing spans 170 feet and has a unique, circular wing that stands 75 feet tall and arches back 27 degrees to attach itself to the tail of the aircraft.

A third revolutionary concept, for a "Flying V" plane, is set to make travelling more affordable for holidaymakers.

The aircraft merges the passenger cabin, the cargo hold, and the fuel tanks into one space - the wings.

Its design makes for a smaller and lighter aircraft that uses less fuel.
