Mark Lawrenson reckons Liverpool won't go near Roberto De Zerbi after he made cryptic comments about his future at Brighton.

The Seagulls boss became the favourite to replace the departing Jurgen Klopp in the summer after Xabi Alonso ruled himself out to remain at Bayer Leverkusen.

Reports have since emerged that De Zerbi is also out of the running, and former Liverpool star Lawrence believes it is because the Italian is "getting carried away" amid the speculation around him.

"We've seen how much money they've made this year," Lawrenson told Paddy Power. I thought Roberto De Zerbi was a bit naughty last week, saying he wants more players. Brighton gave him his big gig, and he's done very, very well.

"But once you go down that route of asking for more players, and maybe his agent is speaking to other clubs, I don't think Liverpool will go anywhere near him.

"He's a good manager, but I think he is getting carried away – Brighton haven't had a particularly good season. He's not dealt with the extra games and blamed it on not having enough players. De Zerbi won't go to Liverpool, and he might've put one or two prospective club owners off him.

"Brighton are a well-run club – they got £22 million for Graham Potter and his backroom staff. They'll just get another manager in – and being run the way that they are, they probably know who their next manager is."

De Zerbi recently admitted he has yet to sign a new Brighton contract, hinting he wants more say on transfers before he is willing to commit his future to the club.

"I have a different way to decide my future," he said. "I want to speak with my club, I have a contract but the problem is not the contract – the problem is to find the same plan, the same target, the same vision for the future.

"For me, I have not decided yet what is my future, because I have the contract, but anyway I want to speak with Tony (Bloom), my club, to understand their plan, to understand his plan, the Tony plan. Then we take the decision together, without problems."
