The Duchess of York apparently fought valiantly to stop her ex-husband Prince Andrew's car crash Newsnight interview seeing the light of day.

In a fairytale ceremony that had the nation glued to their TV sets, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson married at Westminster Abbey on July 23, 1986. However, just six years later they separated with Fergie blaming their failed marriage on the demands of Prince Andrew's career in the navy.

Although they have since divorced, the couple who share daughters Princess Beatrice, 35, and Princess Eugenie, 33, have remained firm friends and still live together at Royal Lodge on the Windsor Estate. They may no longer be in a romantic relationship but Prince Andrew and Fergie have proven that divorce can be amicable - their eldest daughter Beatrice has even called them "the happiest divorced couple in the world".

Even Sarah once agreed with her daughter's remarks saying: "We always say we are the most contented divorced couple in the world. We're divorced to each other, not from each other." She said the marriage breakdown could be attributed to the fact she only 'saw him 40 days a year.'

And according to reports, it was Fergie who tried to put the breaks on Andrew's infamous Newsnight interview that forced him to step down from royal duties.

Journalist Sebastian Shakespeare wrote in the Daily Mail: "I can reveal that his ex-wife Sarah, Duchess of York and eldest daughter Beatrice both cautioned him against doing the programme, while his then private secretary Amanda Thirsk was more gung-ho, thinking it could offer him a chance to draw a line under his association with Jeffrey Epstein."

Amanda, who had worked for the Prince since 2012, stepped down from her role as private secretary after allegedly clashing with Andrew's former PR adviser Jason Stein, 28, who strongly advised Andrew against going ahead with the interview.

Meanwhile, in a piece for the Sunday Times, Sarah explained why she continues to stay at Royal Lodge with her ex-husband, saying: "I travel a lot and I've always been able to make wherever I am home."

The British author, television personality, and member of the extended British royal family continued: "If I am staying in a hotel I have the same family photographs and scented candles around me. "When I'm in the UK I'm lucky enough to stay at Royal Lodge. I wouldn't call it my home as that would be presumptuous.

And in an interview with US TV show Good Morning America in 2021, Sarah showed her support for her ex saying: "He is a great man and [our wedding day] was the best day of my life. I would do it all over again because he was a very good-looking sailor, but I fell in love with him and I think love conquers all."

Scoop is coming to Netflix on April 5.
