American sparks debate after trying British Chinese takeaway for first time

A Chinese takeaway is one of the nation's favourites to indulge in - but it seems as if not everyone feels as content as we Brits when it comes to tucking into one.

As everyone's go-to, there's nothing quite like devouring some chicken chow mein and salt and pepper chicken, and although it may not be the most authentic Chinese food, it tastes so good.

Nicole Brennan, from New York, decided to give their verdict of the classic British Chinese takeaway on TikTok while visiting the UK, but it seems as if they have sparked quite the debate as it's clear they weren't impressed by the food order.

They posted the video and said: "A New Yorker visits the UK and tries British Chinese takeaway for the first time." Her order included a classic curry sauce, chicken fried rice salt and pepper chips, chicken dumplings and prawn crackers - however, they revealed they didn't quite understand the hype.

As Nicole took a spoonful of chicken fried rice, it appeared to be a little underwhelming and Nicole stated: "Was not expecting it to taste like that, where's the flavour. Literally tastes of nothing, no hint of flavour, how is that possible?" However, she admitted the chow mein did taste slightly better and was one of the better things they had ordered but it still had "no flavour".

It seemed to be the overarching thought of the whole takeaway as Nicole claimed none of the food options had flavour. When they tucked into half of a chicken dumpling, Nicole said the only taste came from the vinegar sauce that they came with, but claimed it wasn't "even a good taste".

Overall, the New Yorker ranked the meal a low score of just four out of ten and unfortunately, it seemed as if Nicole had been put off ordering Britain's favourite takeaway again.

It comes after a Chinese woman decided to also try a Chinese takeaway in the UK. Yinrun Huang, who became popular when she appeared on the Big Brother reboot in 2023, has posted a video to her TikTok showing a huge plate of UK Chinese takeaway food - and her verdict on the dishes has left Brits feeling vindicated.

"British people do make brilliant Chinese takeaway", she reassured. "As a Chinese girl who is living in the UK, I've never tried a Chinese takeaway yet. I'm going to try them, and rate them one by one", she explained, as she showed her plate. It seemed as if Yinrun was a fan of the food and ranked most dishes eight out of ten.
