Fans have been left confused by Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh’s bizarre ‘floating strap’ trend at the Oscars.

The Oppenheimer co-stars, who were both nominated for big awards at the star-studded ceremony on Sunday, hit the red carpet and surprised onlookers who noticed they were accidentally wearing similar dresses. Emily’s couture structured champagne-coloured Schiaparelli gown, which was blasted by fans who claimed the design made it look like she was wearing underwear, featured the shoulder straps levitating a few inches away from her body. While Florence's silver Del Core gown also included the same design feature, but the detail left fans stumped.

“Can someone quickly fix the straps on Emily Blunt’s dress,” one tweeted, as another questioned: “What is going (on) with the straps of Emily Blunt’s dress?!?!?! Is it not meant to touch her shoulders?” Others joked that it looked like the over shoulder harness used on rollercoasters, while one quipped: “‘Off the shoulder’ to a whole new level…” One fan complained her dress was “too distracting”, as another joked: “Looks like an ill fitting body cast.”

“Why are no one‘s spaghetti straps touching their shoulders?” another disgruntled fan chimed in, as one Twitter/X user simply stated: “I think they're silly.” On Instagram, many commented on the unusual dresses, as some claimed the unusual dresses were unflattering. “It makes me think that it doesn’t fit,” one fan wrote, as another joked: “It makes me think of Polly Pocket.”

Emily, who was up for Best Actress for her performance as Kitty Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s epic Oppenheimer, walked the red carpet with her husband John Krasinski, who looked handsome in a white suit. Meanwhile, Florence was praised for her stunning dress that was designed to look like flowing water, and she finished off the look with a chic bob. Emily’s stylist Jessica Paster, who has worked with the British actress for almost 20 years, told Vanity Fair that the A Quiet Place star picked out the Schiaparelli gown at the last minute, just hours before the ceremony kicked off on Sunday.

Explaining the unusual shoulder straps, she revealed they did not know Florence was going to be wearing a dress with similar strap details, and was shocked to see the Dune 2 star’s final ensemble on the red carpet. “I thought (Emily) was gonna be the first one to wear it … and then I saw that the beautiful Florence Pugh also had a very similar shoulder,” Jessica said. “People are reading into it too much. For me, this was a dress for a beautiful, gorgeous Oscar nominee, winner, and that's why I love this dress.”
