Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is a keen admirer Ruben Amorim, the man tipped to succeed Jurgen Klopp as manager of fierce rivals Liverpool.

Current Reds boss Klopp announced in January that he would be stepping down from his role at the end of the season. In the weeks that followed, former Liverpool midfielder and current Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso was widely tipped to be the one to take the reins at Anfield, but has since confirmed he'll be staying in Germany.

As a result, those at the top of the Reds hierarchy have had to turn to alternative options. Amorim, currently at the helm of Portuguese outfit Sporting, is reported to have verbally agreed to become the next Liverpool manager from next season, according to Sky Germany.

The report explains that Amorim has already held positive talks with the Liverpool board and in turn, an agreement in principle has been reached. The 39-year-old has quickly become one of the most in-demand young coaches on the continent and was heavily linked with the Chelsea job after Graham Potter was dismissed in April of last year.

Manchester United were also keen on landing his signature at one point, which would have seen him link up with fellow countryman Fernandes. The Red Devils skipper left Sporting just months before Amorim took the reins, but that hasn't stopped the United star from praising the potential new boss of his rivals.

Speaking in Portuguese media just last month during the international break, Fernandes issued a glowing endorsement of Amorim. The 29-year-old admitted he wants to see his fellow countryman stay at Sporting, but backed him to succeed in the Premier League.

"If he really takes the next step – I hope he stays at Sporting – but if he takes the next step, I think all the qualities are there to be able to succeed in English, French, or Spanish football," United's captain told SportTV.

"Obviously, we know that the Premier League is probably the most desired. The qualities [to succeed in England] are there and he has everything to take the next step, in my opinion. But it will depend on the clubs, the directors, whether they want to pay the Sporting’s release clause or not."

It is believed that were everything between the two parties go off without a hitch, Amorim would pen a three-year contract at Anfield. The deal he currently has in place with Sporting includes an exit clause that comes into play this coming summer.

It has been a busy few months behind the scenes at Liverpool, with former sporting director Michael Edwards recently returning as the chief executive of football. Bournemouth's Richard Hughes will soon join as sporting director.
