NFL expert Charles Davis has weighed in on the debate about who college sensation Caleb Williams resembles more between NFL greats Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers, leaning towards the latter due to Williams' flair for improvisation.
Davis, speaking on NFL Network, said: "You've heard the Patrick Mahomes comparisons with him [Williams]. I think more Aaron Rodgers, because of what we've seen especially over the last year at USC," adding that despite Williams' ability to play within a structured system, his talent shines brightest when he's making plays out of structure.
The 22 year old quarterback, who clinched the 2022 Heisman Trophy, is tipped to be the top pick for the Chicago Bears in the 2024 NFL Draft. His performance at USC has sparked numerous comparisons with elite quarterbacks, but Davis insists it's the Green Bay Packers legend Rodgers whom Williams mirrors most.
"We know he can play with in structure, and boy was he something - we saw that deep down in 22."

Davis explained. "But 2023, he was out of structure a lot and he still made a tonne of plays, all right? That's part of the reason he's going to be the No. 1 overall pick. But he reminds me of Aaron Rodgers. He [Rodgers] had a few years stretch there in Green Bay, before he became the MVP multiple times again, where he would take the snap and be out of structure right away.
"As soon as the ball was snapped, he was starting to move, starting to look, trying to create - and I thought there was a lot of that in Caleb Williams last year."
While Williams is a formidable player, his last season was blighted by ball fumbling issues when playing for USC.
"I think with Caleb there are things to his game that are rare and unique and special," ESPN NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller opined on talkSPORT. "There are also things that are going to have to get fixed. He had eight fumbles last year. That's going to have to get fixed. He is going to have to speed up the way that he plays the game to some degree."

Speculation is rife that Williams will be heading to Chicago following their trade of Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers. But former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III has counseled him to consider pulling an 'Eli Manning' move in light of how Fields' situation unravelled at the Bears.
"After everything that's happened with just Justin Fields, can Caleb Williams really look at that and say, 'You know what? This is the organisation that has my best interests at heart, and they're going to help develop me into the player I want to become,'" Griffin mused.
Yet, disregarding the skeptics, Bears general manager Ryan Poles is focused on the team's future, stating on The Pat McAfee Show, "The past is the past," he declared. "I don't worry about that at all. It's about where we're going."
