A primary school that gives pupils maths A-level questions to tackle has got two of its pupils scholarships at a top private school.

New school Galleywall Primary, City of London Academy, in Bermondsey has stretched its top 11 year old pupils by giving them questions normally sat by 18 year olds. But it has paid off as Hriday Doshi, 11, and Finley Doran, 11, have both been offered places at City of London Boys School where fees are up to £22,000 per year.

Both students came through a rigorous selection process which included an entrance exam and interviews to be offered a place. Galleywall School is a state primary, part of the City of London Academies Trust, sponsored by the City of London Corporation. Notable former pupils include the actor Daniel Radcliffe who starred in the Harry Potter films.

This is the second year pupils from Galleywall have earned places at City last year, student Tommy Burridge earned a place. Finlay said: "It is an incredible opportunity for me and I can't wait to get started in September. I have to say a big thank you to Galleywall for pushing me with the maths masterclass and extra challenges such as creative writing. It helped prepare me really well for the application process to City of London. The interview was tough but I felt I was on the front foot."

Hriday was also been offered a place at grammar school Wilson's in Sutton, south-west London. He said: "I was really pleased to be offered a place at City of London. It's a great school." Galleywall Primary School headteacher Martin Blain said: "At Galleywall we want to push all of our pupils to go as far as they possibly can and fulfil their potential. We have a very strong relationship with City of London School. We are a new school and this is only our second class of Year 6. In both years there have been places offered at City that's a great record.

"At my previous school we helped around 50 per cent of students win places at grammar and private schools. I want to continue that success here so that those who work hard reap the rewards." The maths masterclass was devised by Mr Blain himself a Cambridge graduate and maths teacher. He said: "It's there to stretch and challenge our very brightest students and it's been a big hit."

"We share many events with the City of London schools. This year alone, we sang with them in the Guildhall, debated with a top City law firm and enjoyed a dance festival. We are grateful for their support which allows pupils at regular local schools like Galleywall to enjoy the best opportunities offered by the private sector."
