While the storyline of The Last of Us TV show largely followed that of the games, Fallout has chosen a different path.

Those who have already watched to the end have realised that it answers the question that all Fallout fans want to know.

Who started the nuclear apocalypse that the series is based on?

Note that the rest of the article contains spoilers for Fallout Season 1.

If you are deep into the Fallout lore you will know that the nuclear apocalypse that has befallen the Fallout universe is due to a war between the US and China, with both blaming the other for making the first move.

Series creator Tim Cain has gone on record to say that China started the war, however, he hasn’t been part of the series since Fallout 2.

As an explanation was never given in-game, the story has deviated from his vision in the games that followed.

The finale of the first season of Fallout offers a third answer to the question of who started the fire.

Listening to a meeting between executives from Vault-Tec and various other companies, Cooper Howard makes a shocking discovery.

When one investor asks the vault makers “How can you guarantee results?” on their investment, Barb Howard makes a grim confession.

Barb reveals: “By dropping the bomb ourselves. A nuclear event would be a tragedy, but also an opportunity.

“Perhaps the greatest opportunity in history, because when we are the only ones left.”

It isn’t revealed if Vault-Tec actually ever goes through with this plan, but judging by how Barb talks, it was certainly the intention.
